Fantasy, romance, and witchcraft; it's all here in this story! A "slobbering" ogre of a king who has just executed his second wife, as well as a string of so-called "handmaidens," who didn't come up to scratch removes a 17-year-old girl from a convent and demands that she be his latest mistress. Unbeknown to the king Serena Littlebrook, the unwilling mistress falls in love with the king's estranged son Henry and they conduct a secret liaison in a cottage in the woods where she becomes pregnant with his child. Luckily for her, she discovers that she is a powerful witch and is able, by means of a "glamouring" spell, to bewitch the king into believing that he is sleeping with her, whereas in reality, he is not. Serena subsequently becomes known as the patron saint of the town of Littlebrook.
