The young student of Scottish history, Caitriona "Cat" Campbell, has to do research for an essay on Samhain, the night of October 31st to November 1st. Her destination is the Valley of Tears in the Highlands, as the romantic town of Glencoe (Gaelic Gleann Comhann), scene of a 17th century clan massacre, is also called. She no longer believes in great love, let alone the myths of the past. But the spirit of Dusten MacDonald teaches her better. Dusten is imprisoned in the realm of the fairies and is cursed. Only at Samhain he is allowed to show himself to mortals in search of salvation. She decides to help him.
